How do we sign up?
There will be a brief meeting following open house on Monday, August 19, 2019, at 7:30 p.m., to allow parents the opportunity to sign up for an instrument fitting time and have any questions you may have answered by one of the BCO (band, choir, orchestra) teachers. You can also go to https://bit.ly/2I9hhTo to complete an electronic form to sign-up for a fitting time at Galloway Ridge. Once you attend the fitting, we will help direct you through the next steps to enroll your child in the class.
Sing in choir: Homeroom teachers will pass out choir sign up forms! There is a $10 fee to cover the cost of our performance T-shirt. T-shirt order forms and additional information will be sent home once sign-ups are complete.

What is an instrument fitting?
An instrument fitting is a time for your child to try instruments one-on-one with a qualified music educator. We will have your child try to play their top three choices of instruments and give feedback and advice to help your child pick the instrument where they will be the most successful.
How and when do we get an instrument?
After you attend your child’s instrument fitting appointment we will provide you with information on how to get the instrument. The music team is happy and willing to work with families to find an instrument for your child. We are unable to provide instruments to students but have creative ideas to find one that works for your family’s budget.
We already have an instrument. Can we use it?
Absolutely! We ask you to bring the instrument with you to the instrument fitting appointment. This allows for the child’s music teacher to inspect the instrument and recommend any repairs that should be completed prior to the child learning to play. Students need a high quality instrument with no mechanical concerns in order to have fun in the class and feel successful.
Does my child get a grade for their music group? How are they graded?
Students earn grades for their music classes based on: participation, concert attendance, preparation (bringing their instrument, pencil, and books to class), and assessments.
How many after school events are there?
All of the music groups have two concerts in 6th grade (the first is in December or January and the second is in May). These are part of your child’s grade. Some music groups have elective after school events throughout the school year and are not for a grade. Please refer to your child’s school-issued agenda book if you have questions regarding concert dates.
When will my child have their music group class(es)?
Music ensemble classes begin the week of September 16. Classes meet near the end of the school day for 30 minutes two or three days a week. A personalized music schedule will be sent home with your child prior to the beginning of class.
Can my child play an instrument and sing in the choir?
It is our recommendation most students join only one music ensemble, however they may play in one instrument group (band or orchestra) and sing in the choir. Students are not permitted to play in both instrument groups. If you have concerns about your child participating in two groups, please see a music teacher for more information.
